What Vision Conditions Can be Improved With ICL?

Wang Vision Institute is the first center in Tennessee and one of the first in the nation to perform Implantable Contact Lens and Toric Implantable Contact Lens (ICL). This implantable contact lens is great for those with nearsightedness or astigmatism. Dr. Ming Wang and Dr. Josh Frenkel use this permanent contact lens surgery to help their patients achieve sharper vision without needing eyeglasses. These ICLs are made of biocompatible materials that are well-tolerated by the eye. They are comfortable and noninvasive, making them an excellent choice for patients looking to improve their vision in Nashville, TN.

What is Visian® Toric ICL?

The Visian® Toric ICL is a lens placed behind the iris and in front of the eye's crystalline lens to correct vision. This technique works to not only restore clear and sharp vision, but also to offer UV protection and improve your ability to see better at night. Implantable contact lens surgery is great for patients who don't qualify for other refractive laser treatments, including LASIK or PRK.

Ultimately, the Visian Toric ICL allows our eye surgeons at Wang Vision Institute to treat those with higher levels of astigmatism and myopia while preserving their cornea quickly. The entire procedure takes less than 30 minutes. If you rely on eyeglasses or contact lenses to see clearly and want to reduce your dependence on them, contact our Nashville, TN office to learn about ICLs.

Who is the best candidate for ICL surgery?

At Wang Vision Institute, we recommend ICLs for patients who:

  • Are at least 21

  • Are in overall good health

  • Have myopia

  • Have an astigmatism

  • Have a thin cornea

  • Have had a consistent eyeglass prescription

To know if you’re a viable candidate, one of our skilled ophthalmologists will conduct a comprehensive eye exam and ask you questions about your medical history. Men and women with cataracts, glaucoma, keratoconus, and those who have had cataracts are eligible for an implantable contact lens treatment. Women who are pregnant or nursing will have to wait to have ICL surgery.

What to expect with ICL surgery

Implantable contact lens surgery is an outpatient procedure performed at our Nashville, TN office, typically in under 30 minutes. Before your surgery, we will numb your eyes to keep you comfortable. Nearly all of our patients say they felt no discomfort during their procedure. Dr. Mang or Dr. Frenkel uses advanced laser technology to make a small opening into the eye and use a special tool to place the lens. Your lens is positioned behind the iris and in front of your natural lens to improve visual acuity. You should notice an improvement in your sight almost immediately after surgery. Most people achieve their full result about four weeks after treatment.

What to expect after ICL surgery

After your surgery, you will need someone to drive you home. Before leaving, we will schedule a follow-up visit to our Nashville, TN office the next day so we can conduct a post-surgical assessment. We also will schedule future check-in visits at one month and six months to ensure you're healing well and your vision has improved. We will prescribe anti-inflammatory medication and antibiotic eye drops to help prevent infection.
