Will I Still Need Glasses After Implantable Contact Lenses?

Featured Image

Wearing glasses or contacts every day can be a nuisance, especially when they interfere with your lifestyle, hobbies, or comfort. For people who are nearsighted or have astigmatism, implantable contact lenses offer a long-term option to improve vision without altering the cornea. At Wang Vision Institute, Dr. Ming Wang, a Harvard & MIT graduate who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics, is dedicated to helping patients improve and preserve their vision through the most innovative techniques and technologies possible, including implantable contacts.

More specifically, we are proud to offer EVO Implantable Collamer™ Lens (EVO ICL) in Nashville, TN — and were the first in middle Tennessee to do so — as a groundbreaking solution for clearer, sharper vision that can reduce or even remove the need for corrective eyewear, like glasses, after surgery.

What does EVO ICL do?

EVO ICL is an advanced type of vision correction that works by inserting a soft, biocompatible lens behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. This allows light to focus properly on the retina, correcting refractive errors like nearsightedness and astigmatism. The lens is similar in size to a traditional contact lens but is implanted during a short in-office procedure that usually takes 20 - 30 minutes.

Unlike laser surgeries, including LASIK, ICL surgery does not involve reshaping the cornea or removing tissue. Instead, the lens works in harmony with your eye's natural structure to improve vision and can even be removed later if needed. Patients typically notice a dramatic improvement in their sight within just a few days after surgery.

Do ICLs replace glasses or contacts?

In many cases, yes. The EVO ICL is designed to provide long-lasting correction for common vision problems, allowing patients to enjoy:

  • Sharp vision without glasses
  • Improved night vision
  • No dry eye symptoms
  • Minimal recovery time
  • UV protection built in

While most patients find they no longer need glasses after implantable contact surgery, some may still use reading glasses as they age or for very specific vision needs. During your consultation, our knowledgeable team will walk you through realistic expectations for ICL results based on your prescription, eye health, and goals.

Who is a candidate for implantable contacts?

EVO ICLs can be a great alternative for people who have been told they are not eligible for LASIK or other laser vision correction procedures. You may qualify for ICLs if you:

  • Have moderate to severe nearsightedness
  • Have astigmatism
  • Are over the age of 21
  • Have healthy eyes and stable vision
  • Prefer not to have corneal surgery
  • Want a reversible vision correction option

Some patients may not be eligible for implantable contacts, including those who are pregnant or nursing or who have eye conditions like keratoconus, glaucoma, or cataracts. At Wang Vision Institute, we'll perform a full eye exam and health assessment to determine if ICLs are right for you.

How does EVO ICL compare to other treatments?

EVO ICL offers a unique set of advantages that make it a popular choice for those seeking freedom from glasses or contacts. Compared to laser eye surgery, EVO ICL has some key differences, including:

  • Preserves the cornea
  • Provides UV protection
  • Is removable if necessary
  • Works well for high prescriptions

Our team also offers the Toric ICL, which is specifically designed to treat higher levels of astigmatism alongside nearsightedness. We are proud to be among the first centers in the area to offer the toric ICL for astigmatism, giving patients access to top-tier technology and care.
