Five Reasons Why Visual Examinations Are Worth It

Comprehensive eye exams do a lot more than just correct blurry vision. At Wang Vision Institute, Dr. Ming Wang and Dr. Josh Frenkel diagnose, manage, and treat many eye-related disorders. We perform comprehensive eye health examinations that can detect problems with the retina and cornea, such as keratoconus, flashes, and floaters. Having your vision checked regularly allows us to quickly treat eye problems before they worsen and become more serious.

About eye exams

Eye exams are done for a variety of reasons, whether for driver’s licenses, during vision screenings for young children, or for glasses and contacts. A simple acuity exam doesn’t provide enough of an assessment for eye health. At Wang Vision Institute, our comprehensive eye wellness evaluations combine different testing procedures that allow Dr. Wang and Dr. Frenkel to assess a patient’s full eye health in Nashville, TN. These exams are important to have once every year as many eye diseases, such as glaucoma, don't give any visual signs and can only be detected by our doctors at a visual exam.

Who should have routine eye examinations?

Patients who are between the ages of 18 – 40 should have their eyes evaluated every year. Younger children also should have their initial ocular assessments at six months. Follow-up evaluations should occur just before children start school and then on an annual basis, even if it appears that their vision is okay. These eye checks are especially important since there is an extreme increase in myopia or nearsightedness for younger patients.

What happens during an eye exam?

At Wang Vision Institute, an eye exam takes about an hour. If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them with you to the office. Your assessment starts with a visual acuity test to determine how clear your vision is. Once we determine if you could benefit from corrective lenses, we perform refraction testing. Next, we perform a visual field test, which measures your peripheral vision and helps us to find certain eye conditions. We also perform a cover test to detect if you have a lazy eye or crossed eyes. A slit lamp test is performed to get a full-aspect 3-D view of different parts of the eye. We also can look for signs of glaucoma to thoroughly examine the health of your retina, optic nerve, and macula.

Our experienced doctors can perform diagnostic evaluations for different eye conditions, including diabetic retinopathy and macular edema. After your visual examination ends, we will discuss our findings and offer our professional opinion on what can be done to best improve your eye health.

Reasons to consider visual examinations

There are many benefits to having regular visual examinations at Wang Vision Institute:

  1. Checking visual acuity: Parts of the eyes begin to deteriorate as you age. Checking your vision regularly helps make sure that it remains at its best.

  2. Detecting eye diseases: Many serious eye conditions that can cause blindness have no known symptoms. These conditions develop gradually, making it difficult to detect since you may not even know that your vision has changed. Dr. Wang or Dr. Frenkel can diagnose these conditions at an eye examination.

  3. Diagnosing other medical conditions: The eyes can give us a good indication of your overall health. At our eye exams, we can also detect diseases, like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

  4. Finding developmental problems: Our eye exams can detect vision problems in children, such as eye turn or a lazy eye, which can lead to permanent vision loss if it isn’t treated quickly.

  5. Improving the quality of life: No matter your age, a visual examination can help correct vision, which makes daily tasks much easier to perform.
