Who should have routine eye examinations?

Patients who are between the ages of 18 – 40 should have their eyes evaluated every year. Younger children also should have their initial ocular assessments at six months. What happens during an eye exam?

Your assessment starts with a visual acuity test to determine how clear your vision is. Once we determine if you could benefit from corrective lenses, we perform refraction testing. Next, we perform a visual field test, which measures your peripheral vision and helps us to find certain eye conditions. We also perform a cover test to detect if you have a lazy eye or crossed eyes. A slit lamp test is performed to get a full-aspect 3-D view of different parts of the eye. We also can look for signs of glaucoma to thoroughly examine the health of your retina, optic nerve, and macula.
