Whether you’re preparing for vision correction surgery or looking forward to life post-op, taking care of your eyes should remain a top priority. Making small changes to your daily routine can result in huge improvements to your eye health. Take a look at this list of 5 habits for healthy eyes.

Get Plenty of Sleep

When you don’t get enough sleep, your eyes suffer. Dry, itchy, and red eyes are often a result of a bad night’s sleep. Do your best to go to bed early and get plenty of rest. Your eyes will thank you for it!

Protect Your Eyes

There are many instances where your eyes require some extra protection. On a bright and sunny day, put on a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from harsh UV rays. If you’re completing a DIY project that requires power tools, doing a science experiment, or playing a contact sport, wear the proper protective eye gear for your activity.

Eat Right

Not only is eating fruits and vegetables good for your diet, it’s also good for your eye health! Carrots and sweet potatoes are rich in Vitamin A, which helps your retina function properly and avoids dry eye.

Fruits containing Vitamin C, such as oranges, tangerines, and grapefruits, help repair and grow new tissue within your eye. Consuming foods with Vitamin C can also delay the appearance of cataracts.

Wash Your Hands

Touching your eyes with unclean hands can result in uncomfortable bacterial infections. Before applying eye drops, removing contacts, or getting something out of your eye, be sure to wash your hands. Try using a mild soap that is not heavily fragranced and dry your hands on a clean lint-free towel. This will avoid the spread of any germs or bacteria to your eyes.

Schedule Eye Exams

Stay on top of your eye health by regularly checking in with your eye doctor. A professional optometrists will be able to perform an eye exam to test your vision. During the exam, the doctor can access any potential vision threats like glaucoma, which otherwise won’t give any warning signs. Wang Vision Institute is happy to refer you to the recommended optometrists in your area.
