Speaker 1: Vision is arguably our most precious sense, but some eye injuries can be nearly impossible to fix, chemical injuries are among the toughest.
Speaker 2: Dr. Ming Wang has been looking for a way to restore vision to people blinded in chemical accidents. The trick is, scar tissue forms over the clear part of the eye and nothing, not even a corneal transplant, can stop that scar tissue from growing. Except amniotic tissue. There's something unique about fetal tissue. The fetuses can heal in the womb, and be born without scars.
Speaker 2: Whatever that magic is that makes that possible is also present on the amniotic sack, so you can remove the scars in the eye and then spread this amniotic tissue over the top, and the eye will heal without scars.
Dr. Ming Wang: So we're just taking advantage of an opportunity that God has sent and nature has given us, to see what we can maximally understand, and benefit our patients today.
Speaker 2: Dr. Wang's done this about a hundred times. He has a 60 to 70% success rate at restoring functional vision. Not 2020 mind you, but the vision that does allow people to see enough to move around with good depth perception, and drive, and even to work more easily. The biggest problem, many insurance companies do not cover this technique just yet.
