What Happens If Your Vision Changes After ICL?

Modern advancements in corrective vision surgery technology have made it more possible and more convenient than ever to free yourself from glasses — and even contacts. ICLs — or implantable contact lenses — can even serve as an effective and appropriate alternative to LASIK vision correction, helping patients get clearer vision and renewed independence they can count on.

Still, it’s important to understand how your vision may potentially change after ICL, including the unrelated development of cataracts and other age-related conditions, and what options you have should vision changes occur. Here, Dr. Ming Wang, a Harvard and MIT graduate who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics, shares important information on ICL eye surgery, post-ICL vision changes, and how to regain clearer vision you can count on long term.

What is ICL eye surgery?

Implantable contact lenses (ICLs) are designed primarily to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism by placing a thin, biocompatible lens inside the eye, behind the iris, and in front of the eye's natural lens. Unlike LASIK, ICL surgery does not reshape the cornea or remove corneal tissue, making it an excellent option for many patients with high prescriptions or corneas that may not be ideal for laser vision correction. One of the features patients like most about ICLs is that they are designed to remain inside the eye long term while preserving the eye's natural lens and maintaining the eye's anatomy.

How are contact lens implants placed?

Although the idea of placing a lens inside the eye may sound intimidating, ICL surgery is typically a quick outpatient procedure. During surgery, the surgeon creates a very small incision through which the folded lens is inserted. Once inside the eye, the lens gently unfolds into its proper position behind the iris. The procedure is performed using numbing eye drops, and most patients experience little discomfort. Because no corneal tissue is removed, recovery is often relatively smooth, with many patients noticing dramatically improved vision within the first few days after surgery.

Will I have 20/20 vision after ICL surgery?

Many patients achieve outstanding vision after ICL surgery, and some are able to see 20/20 or better. However, no vision correction procedure can promise a specific visual outcome for each patient. Your results after ICL eye surgery depend on several factors, including:

  • Your prescription before surgery
  • The overall health of your eyes
  • Whether you have other eye conditions
  • How your eyes heal

The goal of ICLs in Nashville is to reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses while providing clear, high-quality vision that fits your lifestyle.

Can I get cataracts after getting implant contacts?

Yes, and this is one of the most important things patients should understand before choosing ICL surgery. ICLs do not prevent the normal aging process. Because your natural lens remains inside your eye, you can still develop age-related cataracts later in life, just as someone who never had ICL surgery can. Fortunately, cataracts can still be treated if they develop years later. During cataract surgery, the eye's natural cloudy lens is removed, and your ophthalmologist will also remove the ICL before implanting a new intraocular lens (IOL). In other words, having ICL surgery today does not prevent you from successfully undergoing cataract surgery in the future should you ever need it.

Can ICLs be replaced?

Although ICLs are intended to remain in place, they are removable and exchangeable if medically necessary. This is one reason many surgeons consider ICL technology to be especially versatile.

Lens removal or replacement may be considered if:

  • Your prescription changes significantly
  • You later develop cataracts
  • A different treatment becomes medically appropriate
  • Another eye condition develops that requires surgical intervention

Most patients don't need to have their ICL replaced, but it's reassuring to know that the procedure is not irreversible if circumstances change over time.
