On April 20, 2010, the first two cataract surgeries in the state with a new generation intraocular lens were successfully implanted by Ming Wang, MD, PhD, clinical associate professor of ophthalmology for the University of Tennessee and director of Wang Vision Cataract and LASIK Center, Nashville, TN. These first cataract surgeries utilizing this innovative lens have put Nashville on the national map as one of the first centers in the United States to implant the lens after its recent FDA approval. Barbara Hollingsworth, a 67-yo patient, became one of the first patients in the state to receive Dr. Wang’s new “Forever Young Lens” implantation after her cataract surgery with Dr. Wang. This new lens has enabled Barbara to see both distance with 20/20 vision and also read up close at 20/20 (J1), at the same time in the same eye, the reading vision of a 20-yo! If Barbara takes good care of her eyes, she is expected to keep her youthful reading vision for the rest of her life! Barbara called this new lens the “Forever Young Lens”! |

The new multifocal presbyopic intraocular lens, which Dr. Wang helped introduce to our state, represents the most advanced technology for treating presbyopia and for cataract surgery. Compared with previous multifocal lenses, these new lenses are better in the following three important ways:
- Excellent vision in all three ranges (near, intermediate, distance)
- Excellent night vision
- Vision not affected by pupil size or lighting conditions
The improved reading ability of patients who receive this new lens is expected to be unaffected by aging -- provided one maintains good eye health--so therefore, many of our patients refer to it as the “Forever Young Lens”!
- A Harvard and MIT graduate (MD, magna cum laude), and one of the few eye surgeons in the world today who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics, Dr. Wang was one of the first surgeons in the state to implant the new Forever Young Lens.
- Dr. Wang has been performing intraocular lens procedures for the past 15 years, and is one of the most active Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) surgeons in the US today.
- The Forever Young Lens technology requires the state-of-the-art LASIK/PRK technology--for which WVI is an international leader--to back it up. Dr. Wang was the first in the state to perform bladeless all-laser LASIK, and he has performed over 25,000 LASIK procedures, including on over 3,000 doctors. He was also the first in the world to perform a laser-assisted artificial cornea implantation.
- WVI is equipped with the most advanced corneal and lens imaging technologies. The successful performance of these new lens procedures depends critically on the understanding and accurate measurement of corneal and anterior segment dimensions. Dr. Wang published a major textbook on corneal topography (see below), and holds several US patents for related technologies.
- For many years, WVI has been assisting a great number of regional cataract surgeons by performing IOL lens calculations for their cataract surgery patients.
